Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Public & International Affairs ( PIA ) Department is anacademic department whose faculty is engaged in teaching, researchand advising undergraduate and graduate students. This departmentoffers a B.A. degree in Political Science, minors in politicalscience, international affairs, public administration, pre-law andinternational security . The department also houses a Masterof Public Administration ( MPA ) program, a Masters of Arts inConflict Management and Resolution ( CMR ), Post GraduateCertificates in Emergency and Disaster Management and ConflictManagement and Resolution and a Master of Coastal and Ocean Policy( MCOP ). Class instruction, conducting seminars, writingmanuscripts and papers are the primary responsibilities of thefaculty however, faculty members are also engaged in suchactivities as rendering services to professional organizations byconducting survey research, making presentations to professionalaudiences, directing students engaged in individual study, and inhonors projects, internship/practic*ms, serving on local boards,dispensing expertise to local government and nonprofit agencies andschools.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

  • Provides general administrative support to the Public andInternational Affairs department chair, faculty, students, andother staff
  • Processes purchases, requisitions and independentcontractors
  • Inputs the department course schedule into Banner
  • Provides support for faculty searches
  • Manages keys and building access
  • Maintains department files including including equipment,computer and surplus tracking
  • Serves as the receptionist for the department
  • Assists with various office matters including room scheduling,answering telephones and welcoming visitors, directing students todepartment resources, and copying and preparing classmaterials
  • Coordinates departmental events
  • Assists in the supervision of student workers in coordinationwith the department chair
