Obituary Preview: Garnette Morris Meadows, age 83, of Ruckersville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 4, 2024 surrounded by her two daughters. Garnette was preceded in death by her parents, Perry and Annie Morris; a son, Scott Meadows; her sister, Faye Oliver; a brother, Harold Morris; and a niece, Wanda Oliver.She is survived by her children, Terri Hurley and her husband, Mark of Elkton; and Amanda Mills and her husband, Jon of Ruckersville. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Barry Ecroyd and his wife, Billie Jo of Elkton, Jordan Ecroyd of Harrisonburg, Perrin Mills of Charlottesville, Ariana Mills of Ruckersville and Kelan Mills of Ruckersville; as well as great-grandchildren, Trey Ecroyd and Madison Ecroyd of Elkton; and two special nieces, Gloria Oliver and Kathy Knight of Ruckersville.Garnette was born January 21, 1941 in Dyke, Virginia. She graduated from William Monroe High School in Stanardsville, Virginia. She started her career at UVA’s Payroll Department and worked there until she went to work for the Gynecological Oncology Department as the secretary. From there, she worked for Dr. Curt Tribble at UVA in the Cardiac Department. She retired from UVA in 2006 and then became a full-time Nana/Grandma, visiting and driving her grandkids around wherever they needed to go. She was a lifelong member and taught Sunday School at Spring Hill Baptist Church in Ruckersville for over 20 years and enjoyed every single minute of it. She made a huge impact on a lot of people and was well loved!The family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers of the Memory Care side of Brookdale Senior Living in Harrisonburg, Virginia for their wonderful care of mom. Also, we would like to thank Legacy Hospice of Harrisonburg for the amazing care and support we received during the short time mom was with them.A Memorial Service will be conducted 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.

She excelled on the basketball court with many accomplishments, such as scoring over one thousand career points and previous region 2B player of the year. Following graduation, Lauren received her Radiologic Technologist credentials from Sentara. She later achieved her CT Scan and Mammo Technologist certification as an employee of Valley Health at Page Memorial Hospital. She attended and got saved at Bethlehem Church in Stanley.Lauren is survived by her loving husband, Caleb Scott Andrews, who she married on October 15, 2022. His family had a gospel band, Stars of Bethlehem based out of Vienna. Chip had a great love for playing the bass guitar and overall appreciation of music. He spent time living in Pennsylvania and Colorado before moving back to Virginia. Jane loved the beach, traveling to see the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. She enjoyed Nascar races and spending time with her family. She was a member of Fields United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. She retired from Coors after many years of service. Roger Dale Shifflett, 79, of Elkton, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2024 at his home. He was born August 17, 1944 and was the son of the late Virgil Henry Shifflett and Elsie Virginia Dean Shifflett.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Bill Shifflett, Johnny Shifflett, Charlie Shifflett and Fonda Shifflett; sisters, Patsy Shifflett and Janice Lawson.

Edith Jones Banks - February 20, 1935 - April 20, 2024

Obituary Preview: Edith M. Jones Banks of Elkton, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She was 89.Mrs. Banks was born on February 20, 1935 in Shenandoah, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Bennie Whitley Jones and Gennet Brown Jones. She graduated from Lucy Sims High School in 1953 and left Shenandoah to pursue a musical career in Northern Virginia. She worked various jobs to support her dream, then returned to Shenandoah. She went to work cleaning homes for various families in the community. She soon met and married Garfield Earnest Banks, Sr. on June 8, 1963.Mrs. Banks and her husband Garfield traveled for several years during his 24 years in the Army raising their three children. Upon Garfield’s retirement, they returned to the Shenandoah Valley. Mrs Banks was a loving and devoted wife to her husband and mother to her three children and was affectionately known as “Bammie” to her beloved grandchildren. She had a passion for music, and really enjoyed cooking, and welcoming people to share her hospitality. A devoted woman of God, Mrs. Banks was a dedicated member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Shenandoah. She was the Mother of the Church, the president of the Church Choir, in charge of the Benevolence Fund, and a member the Hospitality Committee. She richly enjoyed traveling and singing with the Choir to support many of the surrounding community churches during revivals, as well as singing at many area nursing homes. Her rich Alto voice brought a depth to the choir on many songs and was greatly missed when she could no longer participate. During her leisure time, Mrs. Banks enjoyed sewing, making and altering clothes for many members of the family, quilting to include many blankets and various small patchworks that she gave as gifts. Edith M. Jones Banks of Elkton, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She was 89.

Mrs. Banks was born on February 20, 1935 in Shenandoah, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Bennie Whitley Jones and Gennet Brown Jones. She graduated from Lucy Sims High School in 1953 and left Shenandoah to pursue a musical career in Northern Virginia. She worked various jobs to support her dream, then returned to Shenandoah. She went to work cleaning homes for various families in the community. She soon met and married Garfield Earnest Banks, Sr. on June 8, 1963.

Mrs. Banks and her husband Garfield traveled for several years during his 24 years in the Army raising their three children. Upon Garfield’s retirement, they returned to the Shenandoah Valley. Mrs Banks was a loving and devoted wife to her husband and mother to her three children and was affectionately known as “Bammie” to her beloved grandchildren. She had a passion for music, and really enjoyed cooking, and welcoming people to share her hospitality. A devoted woman of God, Mrs. Banks was a dedicated member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Shenandoah. She was the Mother of the Church, the president of the Church Choir, in charge of the Benevolence Fund, and a member the Hospitality Committee. She richly enjoyed traveling and singing with the Choir to support many of the surrounding community churches during revivals, as well as singing at many area nursing homes. Her rich Alto voice brought a depth to the choir on many songs and was greatly missed when she could no longer participate. During her leisure time, Mrs. Banks enjoyed sewing, making and altering clothes for many members of the family, quilting to include many blankets and various small patchworks that she gave as gifts. She especially loved spending time with her family and friends, attending sporting events and other activities to support her grandkids.

Roy Gene was born May 30, 1940 to Grace Walker Townsend and Harold Russell Davis, at 202 Hill Avenue, in Elkton, Virginia, the house having been purchased by his grandfather, Hiram Frank Davis in the 1920s; predeceased by brother, Harold Ray in November 1945. The family home in Elkton was located where Elk Run is crossed by the Spotswood Trail. The family house of worship was the Elk Run Church, though in his organized religion Roy Gene was later active in the leadership of a mission church at Solsburg. He is Elkton High Class of 1958, and served as a Town Council Member, and two-term Mayor of Elkton. His policies were conservative, forever concerned about waste, fraud, and abuse in local government. In the 1970s, he led an unsuccessful grass-roots effort to prevent Elkton school children having to leave the town to gain their education. He started his work life as a janitor at Dupont Chemical in the 1950s, gained his electrician’s license, and later retired from Merck.Surviving Roy Gene is his loving and loyal wife of 65 years, Rebecca "Jane" Frazier Davis of Elkton, Virginia. Jane is the daughter of Emma Rebecca Jenkins and James Mordecai Frazier. Living children include David Franklin Davis (Dan Meyer) of Hagerstown, Maryland and Cathy Davis of Elkton, Virginia, as well as Roy Eugene Davis, Jr. of Staunton, Virginia. The infant child starting the Davis family died at birth in 1959 and is unnamed and buried in the Elk Run Cemetery, where Roy Gene will join her with the rest of the family. Grandchildren include Cameron Frazier Biller (Gabriela Archer) of Harrisonburg, Virginia; Jordan Townsend Biller (Kattie Cave) of Stanardsville, Virginia; and the children of Roy, Jr., whereabouts unknown.Cathy is the representative of the Roy Gene family remaining in Elkton, with Jane now a resident at Brookdale Assisted Living in Harrisonburg. The Davises are old to Virginia, the marriage of Roy Gene’s parents having brought together two old lines of Tidewater and Shenandoah valley families. His paternal great-grandfather was Iron Monger John Barton Davis and is buried at the Koontz Family Cemetery in Verbena, Virginia. Through his maternal grandfather, Charles C. Townsend of Elkton, Roy Gene descends from the Mayflower families and founders of Yale College and Guildford, Connecticut, as well as pirates on the Long Island Sound; through his mother, Grace, he descends from the Carter, Lee, and Henry families of Virginia, as well as pirates on the Chesapeake Bay. He served in the Army Reserves for some time and also 4 years in the Navy where he rose to the rank of Second Class Petty officer. Roddy was lucky to have served in Peacetime. He earned his electronics training in the Navy and he went on to earn both his bachelors in Healthcare Administration as well as his Masters certificate in Project management. Roddy had a twenty plus year career in Biomedical engineering. He managed the medical equipment and accounts for numerous hospitals throughout his work life. He retired from the Biomedical field three years ago, but attended DeVry University and earned his Medical Coding certification. His last position was coding remotely from home. He loved it. He was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Evangelical Lutheran church in Winchester, Virginia. He loved firstly, his Lord and also, golf, reading, doing the daily crossword, singing and working in the yard. He met his spouse, Julia (McDonald) Stoner at Concordia University and they graduated together. Together they have two sons: Andrew Stoner and Jason Stoner. They were married for 27 years. She was born November 12, 1934, in Page County and was the daughter of the late Olan and Viola Mauck Koontz.On August 10, 1957, she married David W. Frey, who preceded her in death on June 17, 1986. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen K. Grimes and brother-in-law, Donald O. Grimes.Marie was an active, lifelong member of the Elkton United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, was president of the Elkton United Women in Faith, served on the Administrative Council and Board of Trustees. Marie was also on the Worship committee and was in charge of preparing communion each month and having fresh flowers for the altar every Sunday. She was a beloved teacher for Rockingham County Public Schools and touched the lives of countless children by teaching first and second grades at Elkton Elementary for 43 years before retiring in 1999. She was a member of the Rockingham County Education Association and the National Education Association. Marie was also a member of the Elkton Historical Society, the Elkton Garden Club and the Milnes Chapter No.3 Order of the Eastern Star.Marie and David did not have any children of their own, but they had “godchildren” that they loved dearly like their own. Obituary Preview: Louise Blanche Ferrell, 83, went home to be with her Lord and savior on Thursday, February 29, 2024. She was born on December 21,1940 to the late Wilmer and Goldie Seal. Louise was a graduate of Elkton High School, class of 1960. She worked at Alliance until becoming a full-time homemaker. On February 1, 1964, she married Clifton lrving Ferrell who survives. They shared 60 beautiful wedded years together. Louise was a wonderful Wife, Mother, and Mawmaw. She tended a large garden every year, and enjoyed canning the vegetables of her labor, she also kept the most beautiful flower gardens where there wasn't a weed to be found. She loved rocking and always had a grandbaby or a cat on her lap. She was a lifelong member of the Furnace Church where she attended faithfully.Louise is survived by her four children, Susan (Ronnie) Merica, Nancy (Greg) Berry, Michele Ferrell, and Micheal (Lora) Ferrell. Her eight grandchildren, Whitney Merica (Tyler), Brianna Berry, Savannah Gentry (Casey), Tyler Berry, Michael Ferrell, Maggie Anderson (Matthew), Ronnie Merica (Lauren), Noah Ferrell (Diamond); Six great-grandchildren, Kendall, Peyton, Xander, Landon, Huxley, and one baby on the way. Also surviving are five siblings, Frances Templon, Robert Seal, Richard Seal, Genieve Breeden, and Elaine Conley. She was preceded in death by a Great Grandbaby, brother Lester O. Seal and two sisters-in-law. Services will be Monday, March 4, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at Furnace Church on Naked Creek. Family will be receiving visitors at Clifton and Louise's home.

Also surviving are five siblings, Frances Templon, Robert Seal, Richard Seal, Genieve Breeden, and Elaine Conley.

She was preceded in death by a Great Grandbaby, brother Lester O. Seal and two sisters-in-law.

Services will be Monday, March 4, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at Furnace Church on Naked Creek. Family will be receiving visitors at Clifton and Louise's home.
