Otter with Rabies
Recently, a dead otter was found in the creek near Skinners Turn Road. The otter tested positive for rabies. Rabies infections in otters are rare. It was likely infected by a raccoon when it went on land. This is a reminder that the rabies virus is endemic in the raccoon population across Maryland and the entire mid-Atlantic region. Please keep your pets up to date on vaccination. If you observe any wild animals acting in unusual ways, including seeing nocturnal animals like skunks out during the daytime, or animals that are normally reclusive sitting out in the open, please avoid contact and notify County Animal Control (410) 535-1600 x2526.

Notice of Sewer Overflow
The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) Prince Frederick Maintenance Shop, located at 100 Hallowing Point Road, experienced a sewer lift station overflow on April 17 due to a backflow from the county sewer line resulting in approximately 300 gallons of wastewater backing up into the facility’s yard. Upon discovery, SHA immediately stopped the flow and engaged the backup sewer pump to pump the wastewater to county utility.
SHA is inspecting the system components to determine the source of the leak. The spill occurred within the facility’s fenced and locked compound and is not accessible to the public. The wastewater was confined to the SHA property and did not discharge from the facility. The receiving waters for the facility are Parkers Creek, which were not impacted. For questions or concerns, please contact Shawn Schmelzer at 410-582-5589.
